I really hope they don't sell Dorian Gray as a crappy teen movie. I see it more as a Count of Monte Cristo kind of movie. That would be awesome. It's directed by Oliver Parker, who also happened to direct that batshit crazy Othello Mr. Mashburn made us watch in senior English.
Anyways, the basic premise is that 27-year-old British actor Ben Barnes plays Dorian Gray, a corrupt and cursed young man who somehow keeps his youthful beauty eternally, with a special painting gradually reveals his inner ugliness to all.
Sounds like a movie certain people in Hollywood should see. Perhaps we should start showing it to young starlets as a anti- plastic surgery harrowing tale.
I am SO excited. Never read Dorian Gray, at least not yet. I'll have to go up into the library and see if Megan has it lying around. Love Oscar Wilde, so I have a feeling it's going to be a great read. Also, it seems to be a "cool" thing this year- Zooey Deschanel makes mention of it in 500 Days. Don't worry- that blog is coming soon.
Also in it are Colin Firth, Rebecca Hall (Frost/Nixon, Vickey Cristina Barcelona) and Rachel Hurd- Wood, whose uncle is Hugh Laurie. She's gorgeous, non? I really hope she does well after this movie. But basically no one of exceptional importance besides Colin Firth and Ben Barnes. These two actors look phenomenal together. Colin Firth is always, always perfection. Even when he plays a doof, like in Shakespeare in Love or Mamma Mia! he always manages to be my favorite character.
They did an awesome job of making his eyes seem so odd, much older than the rest of his face. Unsettling. Love creepy literary movies. I cannot wait for this. The release date in the U.S. is tentative, boo. But it's September 18th. (the 9th is the U.K. date I believe).
